Capturing memories in the comfort of your own home is one of my favorite ways to photograph families, especially for newborn sessions. It’s personal, intimate, and helps everyone feel more relaxed. I recently had the pleasure of working with a wonderful family for an at-home newborn and family session in Sacramento, and I’m so excited to share their photos!
One of the biggest advantages of an at-home session is the comfort it provides for the entire family. The newborn can remain in their familiar surroundings, and any older kids feel more at ease with their toys, books, and routine nearby. There’s no need for stiff poses or worrying about travel logistics – the photos can be candid and natural.
For this session, we captured a mix of indoor moments and vibrant outdoor shots. Indoors, we focused on cozy newborn shots and playful interactions with their toddler.
I always take some time to focus on those precious, fleeting details – tiny fingers and tiny toes.
Outside, the natural light gave the photos a fresh, airy feel. The family’s backyard and nearby East Sacramento park offered a relaxed space for more candid, fun shots that highlighted their personalities and connection. I always love an action shot!
If you are considering your own at-home session, here are a few tips to help things run smoothly:
- Choose bright spaces. I’ll want to capture your family in the best light, so if you have any rooms with big windows, those will work best! If time allows, clear any major clutter in the background to keep the focus on you and your family.
- Relax and be yourselves. At-home sessions are all about comfort. There’s no need to stage a perfect environment. Let me capture you just as you are.
- Have snacks and breaks on hand. For little ones (and parents!), snacks can make a big difference. If your newborn needs a break to nurse or settle, that’s completely fine – those moments are part of the experience.
- Dress comfortably. Stick to neutral, complementary colors and avoid busy patterns. Comfort is key, especially when you’re interacting with your little ones. Consider a slightly more casual vibe, since you’re at home after all.
- Focus on enjoying the experience. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of “getting the perfect shot,” but I’m here to document your family’s natural connection. Let those candid moments unfold!
This newborn and family session was such a joy to photograph. There’s nothing more rewarding than documenting the bond between a family in a setting that’s uniquely theirs. If you’re considering an at-home session, I’d love to help you create lasting memories in your own home.
