This sweet family has two daughters, one of whom was home from boarding school, and we took the opportunity to capture some beautiful moments in Fair Oaks! I thought it might be fun to share a little behind-the-scenes peek at what I typically aim for during a family session, specifically the variety of poses and combinations you can expect. From classic portraits to candid moments, here’s how I build a gallery that tells the full story of your family.
We’ll start with the classics: a beautifully posed portrait of everyone together, all smiles. These are the kinds of photos that work perfectly for holiday cards and frames on the mantel. I’ll guide the posing and switch up the arrangements and backgrounds so you have a range to choose from.
Then there are the shots made for your walls. Photos that tell a story and highlight the scenery. I love pulling back and capturing your family in a larger setting, like this moment of them walking across a bridge during golden hour.
Movement and candid energy are a huge part of my style. I always include a variety of these in your gallery. Yes, even with teens. Whether it’s walking, laughing, or a spontaneous moment between siblings, these bring your session to life.
I also like to mix in different combinations. Sibling shots, parents only, mom with the kids, dad with the kids. These make meaningful keepsakes and are perfect for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gifts.
And don’t forget individual portraits. A family session is a great chance to capture each person on their own. Whether you want a new headshot or a beautiful photo to celebrate where you are at in life, I’ll make sure you leave with something special. And hey, it never hurts to come away with a new profile picture you actually love!
My goal is always to give you a gallery that feels full and thoughtfully varied. And of course, we can always customize things based on your needs! If you’re ready to schedule your own family session, I’d love to hear from you! Reach out here.
