This riverside maternity session was so much fun! The family was getting ready to welcome baby number three, and rather than keeping the focus just on “the bump,” we took the opportunity to capture the connection between everyone, siblings included. It was a calm, easy evening with soft light and space for the kids to explore. These are the kinds of sessions where everything comes together naturally.

When kids are involved in maternity sessions, I try to keep the energy relaxed and flexible. We let them wander, play, and lead the way when it made sense.  Giving kids space to be themselves makes the photos feel more honest, and it helps the whole family enjoy the experience more. If you aren’t coming into the studio, I have lots of location ideas similar to this: beautiful settings that don’t require a ton of walking for you in your final weeks of pregnancy, but still offer variety. This particular day was very warm, so we chose a river setting for everyone to dip their feet in the water for a cool, relaxing reprieve from the summer sun.

I definitely loved the styling for this session! Mom wore a beautiful purple dress that moved gently with the breeze and stood out from the background just enough. The rest of the family wore light neutrals that kept the overall look soft and timeless. I always suggest choosing outfits that feel good and photograph well, without needing constant adjustment. When you’re not thinking about what you’re wearing, it’s easier to focus on the moment.

What I loved most about this session was the mix of energy. There were quiet pauses between the parents, playful bursts from the kids, and a real sense of excitement about the new baby. We captured a few traditional maternity portraits, but so many of the best images were simple interactions between family members. Those in-between moments tell the story more fully than any single pose could.

If you’re expecting and thinking about a maternity session, it doesn’t have to be overly posed or formal. Some of the most meaningful photos come from showing up just as you are and letting your family’s dynamic shine through. I’d love to help you capture that, reach out today!
