One of the most common questions I get asked this time of year is, “How do we prepare for our upcoming photo shoot?”
Fall is an incredible time for photos, and any photographer will tell you that this season can be WILD. If you’re wondering what you can do to prepare yourself and your family, look no further. Here are my top tips for getting photo-ready:
1. UNDERSTAND YOUR LOCATION
Fall provides some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Sacramento area, and there are so many options to choose from! I always want to work with your vision to get the best possible outcome. Are you wanting a more urban feel, or do you want to highlight the incredible foliage of autumn? Whatever your vision, you’re welcome to ask what colors will be around the environment so you can be sure to match your outfits to the scene.
If you’re going for a more urban vibe, think about clean lines and simplicity. If your location is in the trees, plan for more flowy, patterned outfits. For more tips on choosing your colors, check out this blog post!
2. PREPARE FOR THE WEATHER
We all know that the weather in Sacramento can be unpredictable, especially in the fall months. Make sure you check the weather and dress for the occasion. Bring layers in case it gets a little chilly or too warm (plus, layers look great in photos!).
If there’s rain in the forecast, no need to worry! We can always reschedule with heavy, hard rain, but cloudy days make for flattering soft and layered backgrounds. Whatever happens, we can make the best of the occasion and make beautiful images out of it.
3. REST UP
Nobody wants to look sleepy or have grumpy kids for their session! The night before is just as important as the day of the photo shoot. Plan for an early bedtime and, if possible, naps for the kids before you come to your shoot. Remember: Too much energy is never a problem! We can get the wiggles out and get natural, candid shots. Another pro tip: Make sure everyone — including the parents — are well fed before the shoot. You’ll need that energy to keep the smiles and good moods going.
4. STAY LOOSE!
Speaking of the wiggles, no need to be afraid of them! Our sessions are supposed to be fun. We will spend the first few minutes getting to know each other so that everyone feels comfortable before the camera comes out.
Once we’ve gotten started, we’ll do a few activities and games rather than traditional poses. These pictures are my favorite! They always bring out the best smiles and laughter and highlight the interactions in your relationships. We’ll get a few of the more formal, posed pictures, too, but keeping it loose makes the whole experience better for all involved.
I hope these tips and tricks help you feel more prepared for your upcoming shoot. I look forward to spending time with you, and I know that we will get some incredible pictures. If you’re still looking to book a session, don’t wait! My books are filling up for this year. Contact me today!
