One of the things I struggle with the most as an artist is being true to my own sense of aesthetics, while also delivering images to my clients that fulfill everything they were looking for and more. Most of the time, I shoot a healthy mix of the two (some for you, some for me — works great). However, every now and then, I meet a family, we chat about the session and I start to get excited because I realize that we are completely on the same page and I’m going to get to photograph them the way I’d want my own family to be captured: wild, unscripted, natural, organic, honest. You know — those “in-between” moments. This was one of those families! I had found a new location in West Sacramento, along the levee, where the sky was big and the grass was green and they were excited to just come out and play with me.
Their daughter was just starting to stand up and walk with assistance. It’s the little details like her tiny hands wrapped around mommy’s fingers and those big blue eye gazing right into the camera that get me.
Parents will know that the “sibling shot” is one of the hardest to get, especially at this age, but these two were all cuddles and love.
We hit the season just right with the yellow mustard and tall, green grass — one of my favorite backdrops.
Moments before he gave his mom a big smooch…
Testimonial from a beloved customer:
“We received the album and photos and we are in love. They came out beautifully and we couldn’t be happier. The kids were excited to be involved in the whole process and then see the finished product in a slideshow. They kept saying… “I remember when Jill took that picture!” Thank you again for another amazing experience.”
